The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) has announced changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) that are effective April 8, 2023. The NMFC is a standard that classifies freight based on its density, handling, stowability, and liability. It is used by carriers and shippers to determine shipping rates. Also, it is to ensure that goods are transported safely and efficiently. We will discuss some of the changes and their potential impact on shippers and carriers.
Changes to Classification
The proposed changes to the NMFC include revisions to the freight classification of various commodities. The changes range from minor adjustments to existing classifications to the creation of new classifications. Depending on the changes made, these changes could impact shipping rates. Because some commodities may be reclassified to a higher or lower class. For example, new item 73150 is established for “Flour or Meal,” with a “viz.” format and classes predicated on density breaks at 10, 15, and 30 pcf. And raw, cane and maple sugars are now canceled with reference to new item 73150.
Also, item 73260 – Food Stuff – Group IV which includes coffee and tea has now been amended to include hot chocolate or hot cocoa mixes.
Changes to Packaging Requirements
An example, of packaging requirements changed by the NMFC include a maximum allowable dimension of skids, pallets, or platforms. This requirement is for “potentially unstable commodities” that require a liftgate for pick-up or delivery purposes. This rule applies to commodities having an overall height of one and a half times or more their shortest base dimensions. This will provide the proper stability for a standard skid, pallet, or platform. It will measure not less than 40 x 40 inches and no more than 48 x 48 inches. This provision was put in place as a safety measure for loaders, unloaders, and shippers’ commodities.
The changes to the National Motor Freight Classification are significant and could impact the transportation industry in several ways. Shippers and carriers should remain informed and prepared to comply with the updated regulations to ensure that their shipments are transported safely and efficiently.
